How Stress Shows Up in the Body: A Map of Reactions

Have you noticed that your neck tenses up before a difficult conversation, and your back aches after a hard week? Tension doesn't stay in your head — it spreads through the body, differently for each person. One feels pressure in the chest, another gets a knot in the stomach, a third has their sleep ruined. It helps to know your own map of reactions: that way you can catch tension early, before it turns into pain, insomnia, and that feeling of "I can't cope."
What Happens in the Body During Tension
When faced with a load, the body switches into mobilization mode. It raises your heart rate and blood pressure, tenses your muscles, speeds up breathing, and temporarily slows digestion. This is an ancient mechanism: the body is preparing to run or defend itself.
