Parenting Without Violence: How to Stop Repeating the Pattern

You promised yourself it would be different with your child. And then it hit — and you yelled, grabbed an arm harder than you meant to, said something humiliating. Afterwards comes the shame and the thought: "I'm repeating my parents." That thought doesn't make you a bad parent. It shows that the old reaction moved faster than the new one — and that can be changed, without blame and without promising to be perfect.
Why the pattern comes back on its own
As a child, you learned to react by watching the adults around you. Those reactions got stored as fast ones: yelling, threatening, punishing kicked in before a thought could appear. As an adult, they return in moments of exhaustion, fear, and overload.
