Loneliness and friendship
Social Anxiety and Meeting People: Small Steps

Talking to strangers is harder than talking to people you know. A conversation with a colleague or a friend has context: a topic, a history, clear roles. Meeting someone new is pure uncertainty: you don't know how they'll react, and you can't predict how it will end. It's the unknown, not the people, that triggers fear. And that's exactly why meeting people can be trained: if you break it into steps, each one becomes doable.
Why meeting someone new is scarier than an ordinary conversation
Meeting someone has no script. In familiar communication, you know what to talk about: work, kids, mutual acquaintances. In a first contact, there's no topic, and a pause feels like a failure, even though it's just a pause.
