Shame. The Most Painful Emotion and What to Do About It

Guilt says "I did something bad." Shame says "I am bad." And these are two different worlds.
Shame is the feeling that you yourself are wrong. A failure. Damaged. Dirty. While guilt is about an action, shame is about your very identity. When you feel ashamed, you want to disappear. Vanish. Become invisible. Because if people saw the real you, they would reject you. Shame is the most painful emotion. It strikes right at the core of who you are. It tells you: you are not worthy of love.
Shame is different from embarrassment. Embarrassment is "oops, I did something silly." Shame is "I am something silly." Embarrassment fades. Shame lingers. It shapes masks. You hide. You build an image. You're afraid to be yourself, because you feel unworthy of being seen.
