Grief and loss
Prolonged Grief: When You Need Professional Help

Grief doesn't have to follow a timeline. But there are states where the pain doesn't change for months: it doesn't ease, doesn't soften, doesn't let you return to life. This isn't about grieving "too long," and it isn't about willpower. It's about grief that has stopped moving — and that's when help is needed.
What "prolonged" means
The word "prolonged" is misleading: it hints at timelines, as if there's a norm you're supposed to meet. There is no such norm. People grieve differently, and the pace depends on closeness, circumstances, support, and life history.
