How to Finish What You Start: The Unfinished Business of the Day

You close your laptop, but your mind keeps working. An unsent email surfaces, a half-written document, a conversation you should have started. It feels like you got nothing done, even though the day was full.
This state is called unfinished business, or the unfinished gestalts of the day. It's not mystical: the mind holds onto what's incomplete as a task it needs to return to. As long as something has no ending, it stays switched on and takes up attention.
Good news: finishing doesn't mean doing everything to the very end. Often it's enough to give something a clear ending — take a step, set a date, or honestly close it for good.
