Complex Trauma: When You've Been Hurt Many Times

Sometimes the terrible thing didn't happen just once — it became the backdrop of life: it repeated for months and years, and there seemed to be no way out. Then the mark left by what you went through looks different from the aftermath of a single event — it seeps into your character, your relationships, your very sense of self. That's what we'll talk about here.
What "complex" trauma means
The word "complex" here isn't about severity — it's about the structure of the experience: not one event, but a prolonged situation you couldn't escape. This happens with ongoing abuse, humiliation, neglect, living in fear, in a dependent position, in an atmosphere where a person couldn't run, couldn't defend themselves, couldn't complain.
