Projections: When You're Not Angry at Your Partner—You're Angry at Your Mom

You think he’s driving you crazy. But what’s really driving you crazy is something you never processed years ago.
Projection is when you transfer your own feelings, thoughts, or traits onto someone else. Not consciously. Automatically. You’re angry at your partner for controlling you. But deep down, you’re angry at your mom who controlled you in childhood. You’re hurt by a friend ignoring you. But you’re still carrying resentment toward your dad who never noticed you. Your partner just pushed a button. But the bomb was planted long ago.
It’s a defense mechanism. Instead of feeling the pain from the past, we bring it into the present. Because it feels safer to be angry at a partner than at a parent. Because it’s easier to be upset with a friend than to own your old wound. But projection wrecks relationships. Your partner ends up paying for someone else’s mistakes.
