Fear of Being Alone: Why You Put Up with What You Shouldn't

Being alone feels scarier than being hurt. That's why you stay where you're not valued. But there's being alone, and there's being lonely—they're not the same thing.
The fear of being alone isn't just about dreading solitude. It's the fear of ceasing to exist if no one is there. As if, without a witness, you fade away. This fear makes you hold on to relationships at any cost. Even toxic ones. Hurtful ones. Empty ones. Because better something bad than nothing at all. Better pain than silence.
But there's a difference between being alone and solitude. Solitude is when you're by yourself and feel good. You read. You take a walk. You think. You rest. It's a choice. Loneliness is when you're by yourself and feel awful. And it's the fear of this state that makes you cling to anyone. Even someone who makes you unhappy.
